Selecting the Right Industrial Gate for Your Operation

Industrial building gate

Industrial properties require certain security measures. A perimeter fence and gate are the best way to control access and protect the people and products inside. Selecting an industrial gate depends on a number of factors. Read on to learn more about what to consider when selecting an industrial gate.

Gate Types

  • Slide
  • Swing
  • Arm Barrier
  • Vertical lift
  • Vertical pivot
  • Pedestrian gates

Vehicle Access

There are a number of options for how your gate can open to allow entry for employee, guest, and emergency vehicles.

  • Push-button
  • Telephone/intercom
  • Keypad
  • Radio-controlled
  • Emergency vehicle sensor

Closure

If you’re going with an automatic gate, securing access after a vehicle has entered is another important part of your choice. Most automatic gates operate with a vehicle detector (a censor that prevents the gate from closing prematurely) in conjunction with a timer that closes the gate automatically after a certain period of time.

Opening

Finally, how do you want exiting vehicles to leave? When a vehicle exits your property, an automatic gate uses the vehicle detector to detect approaching cars.

Duty Cycle

Estimate the number of uses your gate will see on an average 8-hour work day. 25 to 50 uses spread over this time frame is considered to be moderate. Take the number of daily operations into account when deciding whether your volume is low, medium, or high.

Voltage

Generally, a low-voltage motor is more expensive than a high-voltage motor. Low-voltage motors come with a battery backup and are better equipped to accommodate high-volume duty cycles.

Power Backup

Manual gates are still operational in the event of a power failure. But an automatic gate will require battery backup units to keep functioning.
