So many security systems have a lot of bells, whistles, wires, and more that can bog it down and stress you out. Want to know the basics? Here are some of the bare-bones, must-have components of a CCTV system to get you started.

Basic Components of a CCTV System

In order for your closed circuit television (CCTV) system to work properly, you’ll need the following devices:

1. Camera. It doesn’t have to be state of the art, but it has to record video—maybe even audio. There are many different security cameras on the market with features that range from black and white, single-lens shots to full color, 360-degree spins, plus night-vision. It’s up to you to choose the camera that best supports the application it’s meant for.

2. DVR. This is where the video footage captured is recorded, stored, and managed. Systems will typically come with software preloaded that helps you manage and configure the connected camera(s). Like the cameras, these DVR systems range in speed, storage space, and other features. But in order to get the most out of your system, your footage needs to be stored somewhere.

3. Cable. The security cameras need to be connected to the DVR and their required power supply through various cables. There are some wireless options, but mostly everything needs to be powered through some sort of cable.

4. Power. Speaking of power supply, even if your system requires batteries, it’s smart to have a backup in case the battery dies in the middle of recording an important event. Vice verse, you’ll want a battery backup for your system in case the power goes out.

5. Tools. Simple tools—like a basic hammer and screwdriver—are always important to have on hand, especially when mounting your security cameras.

From the simplest system to ones a little more complicated, it’s best to research the different types of CCTV systems available and pick the one that fits your needs and budget.
